My new Fluval Chi!
February 2, 2012
I am so excited! I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned it before but I love gardening. I love everything about it but we don’t have any space to garden here. When I first bought my goldfish’s fish tank I looked into live aquatic plants and I was instantly hooked. I can bring my love of gardening and plants to a whole new level! Not only that but I could provide Naruto and Sasuke (my two fancy goldfish) a more natural habitat and cleaner water.
If you own fish you should definitely look into live aquatic plants. It’s much safer for your water friends and they’ll appreciate it.
So, long story short is that I started out with a 1.5gal and one little Java Fern to a 10gal with a few plants. I then wanted to start a shrimp tank after lurking on the Planted Tank forums for a while. I found this amazing Fluval Chi 5gal from someone on Craigslist for only $35! I was housing my Red Cherry Shrimps (RCS) in the 1.5gal as a temporary thing and moved them last night. Success! Here are some pictures of the Chi and my specs:

Tank: Fluval Chi 5 gallon (link)
Filter: OEM Fluval filter
Lighting: OEM LED lighting
Substrate: Caribsea Midnight Black Floramax
Flora: (1) Japanese Marimo Ball (Cladophora aegagropila) (1) Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus), (1) Windelov Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus “Windelov”), Brazilian Micro Sword (Lilaeopsis brasiliensis), (2) Anacharis (Egeria densa) stems
Fauna: (2) Red Cherry Shrimps (the cutest, ever!)

I might need to rearrange the Windelov since I didn’t realize how bright the LED is and it needs to be in the shade a bit more. But, that’s what I’ve got for now. I plan on adding more RCS to the tank once I find a local or reputable breeder. I want to own a whole colony!
I’m waiting on a few plants for my 10gal so I’ll hopefully be able to aquascape that one soon!
